Letter and Numbers

So this story actually took place yesterday, but I could not back date. So my son Logan who is 3 has autism and it is very hard to find things he likes. This can be discouraging so when I see something that peaks his interest, I get filled with excitement. Lately, Logan has been showing a lot of interest in letter and numbers. Since I had an early afternoon with him alone, I decided to take a trip to Michaels craft store and check out their letters and numbers section. This nice worker was helping me figure it what I was even looking for and without really thinking Logan began reaching for all the letters he could reach creating a big mess and I had to quickly clean up and save this trip for a day when I could go alone (these situations are very common). So I continued to walk down other isles as I talked to my none speaking son bc this is what I am told to do. So this day there was a lot of picture frames on clarence and before I knew it I had a full cart of pictures frame that I already had filled with memories from this summer. Having two children with autism, I have learned to shut the world out when we enter the community. I enter my own little bubble and pay no attention to the stares or even comments that come my way. So I cashed out and by this point, I have socks and shoes in my hand, was desperately trying to keep Logan in the cart bc we exceeded his time limit of sitting still and he was starting to have a meltdown. My other hand was try to focus on steering the cart while looking for my car. This is my normal. I get to the car, open Logan’s door first, after about a 10 minute fight to buckle him in I was rushing to start the car and turn on the AC. Next, I have to empty the cart into the trunk of my car. When I walked to the trunk of my car, the worker who was trying to help me in the letters and number aisle was standing there. She was smiling and said let me help you. I thanked her, we chatted a little and as she started to walk away with my cart I remembered to stop her and said “wait! I have something for you”. As I reached into my purse, she smiled back and said oh no that’s okay. I said it’s not money, it’s even better! And I pulled out Lincs love heart that I had received in the mail early that day. I handed it to her and shared Lincoln’s story a little and she said she was so touched. Our interaction was little but it was still meaningful.
